The Monastery of Hamatoura
The Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos, known as “Hamatoura” or “the mountain of fervor,” is perched 450 meters above sea level in the Sacred Qadisha Valley, between Kousba and Ras Kifa in Lebanon.
Once a center for pagan worship, monks transformed it into a monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary. After falling into ruins following World War I, it was restored in 1994 by Archimandrite Panteleimon.
The monastery, accessible via a challenging hike, is the oldest in the area, known for its rich monastic tradition and scenic location.
How We Got Here
Our connection to the monastery runs through family. Mounet Tahoun El Deir is a physical shop in Wadi Chahrour run by a mother who has long offered both Hamatoura's monastery produce and her own handmade goods to customers at the local village level.
MTED Store is a separate, independent venture — a direct link between the monastery and customers beyond the village, with no intermediary in between.
